Middle to Late Jurassic palaeoclimatic and palaeoceanographic trends in the Euro-Boreal region: Geochemical insights from East Greenland belemnites

During the Middle and Late Jurassic, Europe Boreal regions formed a network of semi-restricted, relatively shallow marine basins. Consequently, stable oxygen (δ18O) carbon (δ13C) isotope records from belemnites were strongly influenced by changes in palaeoceanography climate. New data eastern Greenland, which western margin critical Viking Corridor (the narrow seaway that linked Tethys to realm), compiled Subboreal Province Realms are examined together. In both territories, increases δ18Obel across Lower Jurassic boundary indicate cooling occurred, although this appears be temporally offset variable magnitude Realm. This suggests ocean current patterns played major role governing signal. The Upper transition is characterised heavy values Province, but less pronounced northwest Tethys, suggesting trend may have been caused strengthening southward bringing colder waters southwards. uppermost shows δ13Cbel, consistent with observed VOICE event as recorded terrestrial organic matter δ13C, supporting evidence realm become isolated lower latitudes – Cretaceous boundary.
